Your holiday should begin as soon as you leave home, with the airport experience being part of the excitement, especially for young children who delight in watching the aircraft take off and the temptations of the treasure trove of toys and sweets in airport shops. Some airports cater for families better than others though and so here is our Top 5 Airports for Families.
- Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom
A good departure choice, Heathrow has its own family lounge (Terminal 3), a dedicated area for families with play areas for children ages 0-2 and 3-9, a children’s quiet room, a Game Zone for children aged 10 – 15, coffee and soft drink vending, and comfortable seating for adults. There is a discreet area for nursing mothers. Entry is free but there may be a time limit during busy periods. There are also Stay and Play areas in all terminals, with slides, soft play areas and separate baby and junior zones, baby changing areas in every terminal, family friendly parking and plenty of child friendly restaurant choices.
- Miami International Airport, USA
Miami airport has its own canine ambassador, Casey, who spends her days meeting and greeting families. There is also a children’s art gallery, numerous toy stores and ice cream parlours. Baby change facilities are plenty and a ride on the Terminal D sky train should keep kids amused, as will the recreation area on D concourse.
- Abu Dhabi Airport, UAE
Abu Dhabi airport has a large play area (terminal 3) with a padded floor, and is equipped with numerous plastic cars, scooters, plastic slides and play houses. MacLaren strollers are provided free of charge to use around the terminals, available at various locations throughout the airport and can be pushed right up to the aircraft. There are also provide metal push carts with a seating area for a small child.
- Paris Charles de Gaulle, France
Located in the boarding lounges of Terminals 2C, 2D and 2E, play areas come equipped with ball pits, toboggans and mazes. For the older kids, there are pay-to-play areas that feature pinball machines, pool tables, video games and more. Arcades are located throughout Terminal 3. At the international boarding area at Terminal 3, the Gully play areas feature distorting mirrors, interactive world maps, mini-tunnels, hopscotch and TV rooms clad with beanbag chairs and comfy coaches so kids can relax while watching their favourite flicks.
- Faro Airport, Portugal
There’s a colourful play area at Faro airport as well as several entertainment units throughout the terminal. Plenty of baby changing rooms and stations are located in convenient spots around the airport and there are family reserved parking spaces close to the terminals. A good choice of cafes and restaurants offer kids meals and some provide baby food.
