Mauritius is a mosaic of cultures. Its ethnic mix of Indian, French, Creole, Chinese and Muslim inhabitants have created an exciting island full of generous hospitality and delicious cuisine. Unrivalled service levels and outstanding hotels have marked this island as one of the best tourist destinations in the world.

The northern part of the island, Grand-Baie, with its cosmopolitan shopping area and scattering of lovely bars and restaurants, is perhaps the most appealing part of Mauritius. The beaches are some of the best on the island and if it’s fishing you’re into, this is the place to do it. Nature enthusiasts should venture southwest where the scenery changes to dramatic mountains and forested landscapes laced with waterfalls. Its most important landmarks are the Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses, famous for their giant water lilies and vibrant trees and plants, and the Black River Gorges National Park.

The island lies some 1,500 miles off the East coast of Africa. It has a varied landscape, spread over 720 square miles. Indeed, it is the jewel of the Indian Ocean, with 100 miles of superb coastline, multi-coloured coral reefs and dramatic mountain landscapes. With average day-time temperatures of 22°C in winter and 31°C in summer in coastal regions, the island is an ideal year-round destination. The “rainbow” population consists of approximately 1.3 million inhabitants of various ethnic origins, from India, China, Africa and Europe.Capital: Port Louis, 31 miles/1 hour by car.Plaisance airport: 22 miles/45 mins by car.Currency: Mauritian RupeeLanguages spoken: English, French and CreoleTraffic drives on the left-hand side of the road.
