We’re excited to present a carefully crafted collection of luxury family tours and tailor made itineraries in South Africa, beginning in Cape Town and exploring the historic Garden Route and family-friendly game lodges.

With a maximum two hour time difference and a good choice of accommodation, South Africa is a wonderful option for families with children aged five upwards who are eager to try something different and discover an exciting world of wildlife and culture.

All of our South African arrangements can be tailored to you and we will be happy to discuss your exact requirements and make recommendations in order to ensure you enjoy the best possible luxury family holiday. In addition to touring itineraries and safaris we can offer relaxing stay-put or twin-centre options in Cape Town and beyond. The following is an example itinerary, especially designed with families in mind and staying at non-malarial hotels and lodges.

Cape Town, Grootbos, Kurland and Kwandwe Ecca Lodge Safari – 11 nights

Day 1

Meet & Greet at Cape Town International Airport and transfer to The One & Only Cape Town for a 3-night stay with breakfast.

The One & Only Cape Town is a chic urban resort located on the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.  Rooms feature expansive glass doors leading onto private balconies offering commanding views of the waterfront. There is a choice of restaurants from local celebrity Reubens, to world-class master chef, Nobu. Leisure facilities include the One&Only Spa, fitness centre, a heated 350m² infinity-edge pool with private seating areas, the NEO Boutique and excellent kids and teen facilities at the Kids Only Club for children aged 4 – 17 years. The Kids Only Club offers activities centred around themed days with topics such as the ocean and environment incorporated into activities like puppet shows, storytelling, sing-a-longs and culinary experiences  as well as supervised excursions to child friendly venues including Butterfly World, Two Oceans Aquarium, World of Birds, Penguin Colony and Planetarium.  Teens can make use of Wii, Xbox and Play Station but also activity focused excursions such as tobogganing, sandboarding, karting and ice-skating. Big-screen movies are available at the waterfront.

Day 4

Pick up your hire car and drive to Grootbos Garden Lodge for a 2-night All-Inclusive stay.

Set in the picturesque mountain and sea landscape of the Hermanus area in the Western Cape, the exotic, stone and thatch retreat of Grootbos Garden Lodge is one of two lodges in the private 2,500 hectare Grootbos Nature Reserve. The 11 free standing one or two bedroom suites (accepting children of all ages) merge into the surrounding flora, with sweeping views across fynbos-clad mountains and Walker Bay from private wooden decks. There is a restaurant, entertainment room, beauty salon and library with internet access. Outdoors boasts a terrace, pool area, horse stables and immaculate gardens. There is a specially designed children’s play area as well as educational activities, outings, animals/ stables, child minders, babysitters and children’s meals.

Includes: Breakfast, light lunch, 5-course dinner, welcome drink, fresh fruit daily in suite, horse riding, guided walks including Fynbos nature tours, Milkwood walks, marine/coastal drives/walks including the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, De Kelders cliff walk, Klipgat Cave combined with seasonal land-based whale watching (whale watching especially during June – December) and transfers to/from all activities.

Nature based guided activities include whale watching excursions (can be land based or boat based and available June – November), Shark Cage Diving, Walks and Hikes (guided or self-guided), 4×4 Flower safaris (informative and interactive), Beach excursions (take a picnic and enjoy a swim, stroll or guided tour), Cave Tours, Horse-riding (all levels while ponies available for children), Bird watching, scenic flights and quad biking.

Please note: Accommodation at Garden Lodge can only be guaranteed (prior to travel) between travel dates 01 Oct – 31 Mar. Outside these dates accommodation allocation is done on check in.

Day 6

Drive to Kurland for a 3 night stay with breakfast.

A five star luxury country house hotel, Kurland is located on a vast 700 hectare estate close to Plettenberg Bay.  Kurland offers exceptional facilities including tailor made programmes for families. There are 12 luxurious suites, all of which are individually designed. The two elegant suites are inter-leading and overlooking the pool, the six luxury suites are in the rose garden or overlooking the pool and include an upstairs en-suite loft room accommodating two children and the four superior suites include a lounge and spacious upstairs en-suite loft accommodating three children plus a private plunge pool.

There are three restaurants and facilities include a sitting room with a log fire, veranda for signature gourmet afternoon tea, library with a fireplace and television, swimming pool, gym, sauna, steam room and cold pool, as well as a Therapy Suite offering a selection of treatments. Activities at Kurland include walking, hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, tennis, picnics on the estate and polo instruction. There is a children’s playroom, tailor made kids activities and private kids dining room with special menu.

Includes: Breakfast, daily cafe (pastries, cakes, tea and coffee), quad biking, mountain bikes and Shetland pony rides for children under six.

Nearby activities include Birds of Eden (largest free flight bird aviary in the world), Monkeyland (the world’s first free roaming multi-species primate sanctuary), Elephant Sanctuary (interactive elephant activities), Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, spectacular beaches, hiking trails, boat trips, canopy tours and bungee jumping.

Day 9

Drive to the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve for a 3-night All Inclusive safari.

Nestled in the heart of the malaria-free Eastern Cape, in the northern region of the 22,000 hectare Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, is Ecca Lodge. This funky lodge is blessed with breath-taking views over the acacia, aloe and spekboom-studded valleys onto an escarpment of steep shale cliffs. Emblazoned with giant Warhol-like prints, retro light fittings and shades of olive, rust and burnt orange the six spacious suites feature a bedroom with en-suite bathroom consisting of indoor and outdoor showers, separate toilet and twin hand basin, a large veranda and a private deck and plunge pool. A child friendly lodge, Ecca communal areas include a spacious sitting room with a fireplace, small study, dining room, bar area, deep veranda with expansive viewing deck, a swimming pool, children’s play centre plus interactive kitchen for fun meal times and a babysitting service.

Activities include guided morning and afternoon/evening game drives and bush walks. Scenic coastal flights, rhino monitoring, big game walking safaris, private safaris, flight of the Blue Crane and rhino darting are all available at an additional cost. The Blue Crane Conservation Club offers activities for children from ‘Bush and Bones’ walks; face-painting; sand-art; beading, mask making; fishing trips; baking and pizza making; educational board games; bed time stories and cookie making.

Includes three meals daily, soft drinks, house wines, local & premium brand spirits, beers, teas & coffees, refreshments on game drives, twice daily game drives, nature walks, big game walking safari (tracking rhino, elephant and buffalo on foot) accompanied by specialist ranger and tracker team (subject to availability), laundry, emergency medical evacuation insurance, transfers to/from the lodge airstrip and complimentary child minding. Children’s gift pack on arrival includes: Conservation guide with animal checklist; themed games and activities; crayons; pencils; water bottle and range of bath products.

Day 12

Return your hire car to Port Elizabeth Airport and take a connecting flight to Cape Town for your flight back to the UK.

 

Note that availability in the family-friendly hotels and lodges can be very limited during peak holiday times so we recommend booking up to 12 months in advance. The best time to travel is between October and April.

From 1 June 2015, new rules apply to families with children under 18. If you’re travelling to South Africa or transiting through a South African airport with a child you must be able to produce the child’s full unabridged birth certificate. Full details can be found on the FCO website.
