Cape Town and the Garden Route offer the best accommodation and activities for families and this stunning region can be explored via either a self-drive or escorted tour.

Cape Town itself is an iconic city with plenty to do for kids and adults alike and a few nights at either end of your trip is a must. The historical Garden Route stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. Activities along the route include land-based whale watching, archeological cave excursions, beach picnics, flower safaris, birding expeditions and horse riding.

The Eastern Cape offers plenty of opportunity for non-malarial safari expeditions, with some wonderful family-friendly lodges which not only offer the traditional game drives, nature walks and big game walking safari (tracking rhino, elephant and buffalo on foot) but also special activities and amenities for kids such as mini bush walks and safari-themed games and crafts.

The hotels and lodges we work with are luxurious whilst offering an exceptional welcome to families, with suite and connecting room accommodation plus kids clubs and babysitting.

Note that, from 1 June 2015, new rules apply to families with children under 18. If you’re travelling to South Africa or transiting through a South African airport with a child you must be able to produce the child’s full unabridged birth certificate. Full details can be found on the FCO website.
