"Monte de Quinta was excellent and surpassed our expectations and was somewhere we would never have found out about on our own, yet is simply perfect for young children and babies. It is not however like some kid friendly resorts where that theme dominates and everywhere is water slides and clowns, Monte de Quinta feels very grown up, high calibre and chic without being intimidating. Essentially you can really relax.
So the practicalities - short flight from UK, even shorter transfer from airport - lifts and ramps everywhere so buggy friendly, underground car park so the car stays cool. The suites give you a kitchen to do all the baby stuff yet you still get the care of a hotel with room service and chamber maid cleaning each day :) so a real break....
Breakfast was full of kids in high chairs, yet somehow civilized without any din of screams or bad behaviour, not sure how the Europeans manage this but they do!
Great kids equipment everywhere - cot in room and high chair etc.
We could hire a very new and plush car seat from the kids club so no dragging the damn maxi cosi on the plane as well as the buggaboo...so avoiding total meltdown!!
Room service available as is baby sitting and the creche is right by the pool - we had never put our baby (7 months) in a creche and had a few kittens about doing so but it was amazing, the one-on-one care was excellent - in fact he probably had more fun there than with us trying to get him to sleep so we could sunbathe. They played with him, fed him, kept the empty jars to show me what he ate, were affectionate and thorough, told me how many poos he had done...simply brilliant and it gave us a lovely break to go to the AMAZING beach nearby. Blue flag clean, white sand, long, unspolit - a dream of a beach...
A great place to go with a baby under 1 year old as all your worries are catered to, making something daunting and stressful as stress free as possible!
P.S lovely spa for mummy!! "

"Just wanted to quickly say that we are thrilled with this place - love it and we are already relaxed. They told me at check in that we had been upgraded and presented me with a back/shoulder massage - I assume you had something to do with that, so thank you - really very very kind.
The accommodation is everything (and more) we were hoping for and the service is exceptional. We all go to bed exhausted which is great.
S also told us 'I have no intention of going to kids club' - that is OK as she is happy just throwing herself in the pool.
Must go and down another glass of rosé - why is that I only drink rosé on holiday?
I had my massage today and it was divine - I did not realise that the voucher was for one massage each. After I had mine the lady asked when N was going for his... I was not smart enough to say that he has an allergic reaction to oil so I would have to take it. Pretty annoyed at myself about that but after seeing N come back from his so serenely relaxed I felt a little better.
The holiday has been fantastic (and it is not over yet). Off to dinner- it is a tough life.... I so need to win the lottery.
Thanks again as this is perfect and just what we all needed."

"The hotel was amazing, the staff were very special. Stunning rooms, more than we could have wished for, but as our boy is only 19months old the glass bowls and ‘nick knacks’ were very vulnerable!
The only bad side was that the pool was so very, very cold. Nearby the shopping centre was a stunning Irish bar… super service and food. Local beaches were not too child friendly, a very steep slope into the water more like a steep shelf really, very dangerous.
Food in accomm lovely, everything so clean, all in all we were delighted, thank you so much."

"There was a lot riding on our summer holiday to Portugal this year; not least because as a tour operator specialising in stress free family holidays, my husband has certain expectations. This was our first time travelling with three children, three small children I might add, and if my husband was ever to be convinced that a hotel would be the best option for us, then this was the trial…..so no pressure then….
I had specifically chosen the Monte da Quinta and Martinhal resorts on the basis that a) they had large self-catering style accommodation and b) it was Portugal so we could just about manage a 2 hour flight. The fact that they had kids clubs and babysitters was par for the course.
So with a 4 month old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old we rock up at the Monte da Quinta hotel reception (I’m skipping the journey part as remarkably it was uneventful). A nice smiley faced receptionist gave us the low down on where all the facilities were and what was on offer at the buffet that evening and we were shown to our room. I always have a slight nervous disposition during the journey from the reception desk to the room as I am automatically programmed to complain if the location of the room is not to my liking. On this occasion, I had no cause to complain: a delightful large spacious suite on the ground floor, nice and close to reception and easy enough for someone who lacks a sense of direction as I do to find everything. The steriliser I had requested was there waiting in the kitchen: Tick. The cot was all set up for the baby: Tick. Polite bell boy bringing the luggage less than ten minutes after we arrived in the room: Tick. All was going to plan.
We had a two bedroom Suite which was perfect for our family size. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed including two pints of milk for tea and coffee to last throughout the week. The suite was tastefully decorated, the bathrooms were very spacious and the layout was perfect. The high note on which we started the holiday continued throughout our 8 night stay.
We only ate in the main buffet restaurant twice but the food was very good, particularly their International buffet night which offered a great selection of dishes which were kept fresh and plentiful throughout the night. It’s always refreshing to see that the kids area didn’t just have the normal nuggets and chips I’ve seen on so many, but two different types of plain grilled fish, lots of colourful vegetables and a general assortment of tasty and healthy food I would quite happily serve my kids at home. The fact that there is only restaurant does have its upside; most of the staff works breakfast and dinner service so they get to know and your preferences. Within two days our waiter knew I drank only decaf coffee, the table must have enough room to park our cumbersome buggy and we prefer meals outside as opposed to inside. Particular mention to the manager Luis who went out of his way to make sure every guest felt special. It’s a personal preference but I like my resorts to be small and compact so all facilities are near one another. For me Monte da Quinta was absolutely perfect for this.
Our room was a stones throw away from the pool and the reception area, the pool was next to the kids club and restaurant and the villa shop was less than a five minute walk from the pool. I loved the fact there was one central pool area so you got to know faces, kids met other kids and if you wanted to be sociable, it was very easy to make new friends.
On the recommendation of my business partner who had been the year before, and some of my clients, we hired a car for the duration of our stay. We actually calculated that we may have saved ourselves on the cost if we had just got taxi’s on the five nights we ate out given that we didn’t take any day trips to the beach and only needed to one small supermarket shop on route to a restaurant but it was the convenience I guess of knowing we had wheels at our disposal. Quinta de Lago, and its surrounding areas, Val de Lobo and Vilamoura are very manicured and pretty but nothing more than expensive playgrounds for the many tourists and villa owners that descend upon them during the summer months, we really felt like we had no taste of the real Portugal here. We were lucky to have been armed with recommendations of some of the nicest restaurants within a 30 minute drive of the resort and consequently failed to have a bad meal. It was also refreshing to see that most places had plenty of stuff to amuse the kids and enough other families to stop us feeling like we going to be the only ones causing havoc!
I only visited the spa once but I had the signature treatment which was a Vichy shower and it was blissful. The therapist knew exactly what she was doing, the treatment ran on time and I was free to enjoy all the other facilities for as long as I liked before and after my therapy. It was the perfect way to enjoy my time away from the kids.
Speaking of the kids, they were not overly enamoured with the kids club but they did go without too much protest. Whilst the set up was perfectly okay and the staff were happy and smiley, I am not sure they were dynamic enough with their activities. I think kids beyond six would certainly struggle to be entertained but what they did do well was provide very good arts and crafts projects which are always a winner with my two. Babysitting is a whopping 17 euros per hour which is off putting but I kept reminding myself that the MQ was so much better value than other resorts of its calibre in Europe that it’s what you would call more of a “pay as you go”. It’s really important to have this in mind as the kids club is also expensive at 17 euros per hour.
There were a whole heap of positives and very few downsides but I think it’s important to mention them as I did promise that this would be an honest blog…. We enjoyed a kids buffet evening down by the villa pool. It was a set price of 25 E per adult and 12 per child. The buffet was a bit disappointing but a greater disappointment was the awful stench emanating from the sewer. There is a water plant behind the villa complex and whilst they are working hard to relive the area of the smell, it wasn’t in time for our dinner which was a bit off putting to say the least! The kids did enjoy the evening and it was a nice opportunity to mingle with other guests so not a total write off but I wouldn’t be quick to recommend people sign up for it!
The other downside, though at its worst in the peak months of July and August was the sun bed fight. There are simply not enough beds for the guests and this was mostly due to the fact that the guests in the villas all prefer to use the suite pool (which is by far the nice of the two). Consequently it’s a scrum in the morning to snag a bed which is never fun when the purpose of a holiday is a bit of a lie in! Armando, or “pool Robocop”as we affectionately nicknamed him was incredible and always managed to ensure we had enough parasols over us to cover the 3 kids, particularly the baby and heavily policed those beds sitting too long with towels on them but no people. He was a star and worthy of his own mention!
Monte da Quinta is not trying to be a five star and failing, it is very much a four star with so many five star qualities and for this it seemed to exceed the expectations of all the guests I had the pleasure of meeting with and talking to during my stay. Although I have highlighted the downsides, these would in no way put me off returning, I would just plan them better into my next trip. I would add on between 500 and 800 euros for childcare for one week and set it aside at the time of working out my flight and accommodation cost so it was included with the holiday budget. I would also be more inclined to forgo the car and just use taxis in the evening as with a troop of young children day trips out were just too much to manage!
My top tip – the kids burgers from the pool bar restaurant were absolutely delicious and certainly big enough for a healthy sized adult…..these were reasonable at 7 euros.”

"The holiday was great.
The accommodation is perfect for families.
The location is superb.
The staff were excellent - friendly, always had a smile on their face and great with the children.
The facilities are simple but effective for what our needs were and based on the cost of the holiday..... it is a great value for money.
The kids club was also very good but my only remark would be that the activities did not cater for elder children of perhaps 5+ - my boys really enjoyed it but were slightly bored - it is fine for perhaps 1 /12 hours but no more.....maybe it is not active enough for boys???? but the staff were excellent.
The babysitting was provided by the KC and they were always on time and we felt very at ease leaving our children with them...... again my only remark would be it is a tad pricey at 17 euros / hour
Overall we had a really lovely time there and if it is priced similarly next year we are likely to go again. Thanks for arranging it all."
