Where We Sent Our Clients This Summer

Every year we say the same thing to each other around this time: this was the summer people got braver. Braver about where they’d go, braver about who they’d bring, braver about swapping the usual two weeks on a sun lounger for something that actually stayed with them. Looking back at what we’ve booked over the past few months, that’s exactly what happened. Here’s a look at four trips that stood out.

The Dolomites

We sent more people hiking this summer than we have in years, and the Dolomites were where most of them ended up. There’s something about that landscape that photographs never quite prepare you for; the jagged pale rock catching the light differently morning and evening, meadows still green and busy with cowbells while the peaks above look almost lunar.

Accommodation choices ranged from small mountain hotels with proper Tyrolean cooking, to uber deluxe hotels with all the whistles and bells. We included cable cars up to rifugios for lunch with each of our trips, where clients came back talking as much about the food as the views. It’s proved itself as a brilliant alternative for anyone who loves the Alps in winter and wanted to see what they look like without the snow, quieter than the obvious Italian lake towns, and far more dramatic than people expect.

Bali & Surrounding Islands

Bali keeps earning its place on the list because it does something few destinations manage: it works equally well for a couple wanting total quiet and a family wanting a bit of everything. This summer’s trips ranged from villas tucked into the rice terraces around Ubud to beach clubs along the Bukit Peninsula, with private drivers stitching the two halves of the island together. What kept coming back in feedback was the value, properties with private pools and full staff for a fraction of what the equivalent would cost in Europe, plus a level of warmth from the people there that clients kept mentioning long after they’d landed home. A good Bali itinerary needs pacing, though, which is where a few days of proper planning earns its keep.

Svalbard & Greenland Arctic Expedition

Of everything we planned this summer, the Arctic expedition for a solo traveller is the one we’re proudest of. Combining Svalbard and Greenland into a single trip meant polar bears, walrus colonies and glaciers calving into the sea in one leg, then Greenland’s fjords, icebergs the size of buildings, and small Inuit settlements in the other. It’s not a trip for everyone, the logistics are genuinely complex, and it demands travellers who are excited by the cold rather than tolerating it, but for the right client it’s unlike anything else we sell. Choosing the right ship is paramount, and as experienced expeditioners ourselves, we truly understand which vessel will suit the requirements best. Everyone who’s come back from it has used some version of the same sentence: that it recalibrated their sense of scale.

Villas for the Whole Family (and anyone else that wants to tag along)

The trip we book more than almost any other, and the one that never stops evolving, is the multi-generational villa holiday. Grandparents, parents, children, sometimes an aunt or two, all under one very well-chosen roof. The brief is rarely just “a big villa”, it’s a villa with a pool shallow enough for the youngest and a terrace far enough from the bedrooms that the adults can stay up once everyone else is asleep. This summer that meant farmhouses in Puglia, an estate outside Marbella with staff who quietly ran the whole week, beach villas in Barbados and a cluster of villas in the Algarve & Comporta that let three separate households have their own space while sharing one long table each evening. No brief is too hard. A themed fairytale style event for a 21st birthday gathering involving a Mad Hatters Tea Party and a treasure hunt all took off without a hitch!  Getting it right is entirely about the details, and it’s usually the trip families talk about for years.

The thing that stands out the most from all the trips we plan, is that our exceptional partners on the ground in each of the destinations we send our clients to, along with the preparation and planning that’s done behind the scenes before travel, is a huge part of the success. That’s of course in addition to all the little touches we add along the way, but you would have to travel with us to know that 🙂
