About The Hotel

The Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel is a luxury family resort offering the best of both worlds. Located within a protected natural park in the Western Algarve and overlooking the Martinhal beach, this resort is surrounded by stunning natural landscape, but also very close to the historic fishing town of Sagres and only just over an hour away from Faro airport. The wonderful thing about this resort is the way it combines affordability, luxury and genuine hospitality into a really memorable guest experience. The self catering villas within the resort are perfect for families.

In the resort’s Village Square there are many facilities to keep the kids happy. The Raposinhos Kids Club and Crèche is open to children between the ages of six months and eight years old, and is supervised by a dedicated and qualified (English-speaking) team in very impressive adult-to-child ratios – this kids club is open every day and is often taken outside in the summer months. There are also separate babysitting services available. Other facilities found in the square are the garden playground and the ‘Blue Room’, a place where older children can enjoy video games, table football and use of the internet.

The three restaurants on site offer gourmet, fresh fish/seafood and bistro-style cuisine giving guests a wide choice of dining experiences where only the highest quality Portuguese produce is used. There are childrens menus available for the little ones at Os Gambozinos, a lively bistro-style restaurant that is a favourite with guests.

The Martinhal resort is made up of two separate accommodation types. The Hotel Martinhal has 38 deluxe rooms with private terraces; the hotel is surrounded by a selection of unique luxury villas, each with its own grounds and a private swimming pool. The furnishing inside every villa is different but all share the same exceptional quality. They are ideal for families. Please contact us with any enquiries you have.

There is an endless abundance of activities on offer at the Martinhal, designed to delight the whole family. Sporting activities available from the resort’s Club 98 include bike rentals, tennis, football, a gym, kayaking, paddle surfing, wind surfing, diving, trekking, parasailing, rock climbing, golf, horse riding, fishing and surfing, among many more. There are a total of five swimming pools around the resort, the largest overlooking the nearby beach front, and three others particularly popular with families and young children. From June until September, swimming lessons for children are available (with costs depending on the age and swimming capabilities of the child). The three restaurants on site offer gourmet, fresh fish/seafood and bistro-style cuisine giving guests a wide choice of dining experiences where only the highest quality Portuguese produce is used.

The Martinhal believes in the enriching philosophy of ‘barefoot luxury’, which celebrates the resorts’ unique relationship with its surrounding environment. The Martinhal’s Finisterra Spa has this philosophy at the heart of everything it does, and situated in a secluded area of the grounds, guests can discover within a profound sense of natural wellbeing. The spa has six individual treatments rooms, a sauna, a steam room, its own spectacular gardens, and it offers an exclusive range of massages, rituals and treatments using only 100% organic materials.

  • TC 28 July 2017 "Thank you - we felt that your description of the hotel and it's suitability for us as a family was spot on!

We had a lovely time and were very happy both with the hotel and it's facilities. The accommodation worked perfectly as it gave us a lot more space as well as the freedom to "dine in" if we wanted to. The shop on site is well stocked for this or there are shops in Sagres which are definitely walkable.

It was indeed windy most of the time which you are right to bring to people's attention. However this did not detract from our holiday - maybe it's because we're from the East coast of Scotland and are used to it! Certainly the one day the wind dropped, it was very hot!

We did feel that families with children aged 9 and under would probably benefit the most from the resort as the childcare (which looked very good) is free for them. For older children, the activities looked very appealing but are on the expensive side. Our children were delighted with the games in the Blue Room though (which do not require coins, a definite plus!)

The airport transfer (without hold ups) is a good 1.25 hours and there is a lot of renovation work going on at Faro which means security etc takes that bit longer. I would allow extra time at the moment - we brought forward our departure time from the hotel by 20 mins"

  • AH 10 March 2015 "We had a great time at Martinhal, my Mum and I were so impressed with the resort and the incredible facilities for children. Kitty played from the moment she woke up and there was never a dull moment. The staff are wonderful with children and I was always impressed with their attitude and friendliness to Kitty. At the first evening at supper we were amazed to see the play areas in the restaurant that were staffed by a member of the kids club until 9pm if you needed it. This meant my mum and I could enjoy some adult conversation whilst Kitty went off to play in between mouthfuls!

The indoor pool was a bit hit with Kitty, especially the slides. The indoor soft play was also good, as we had a couple of rainy days to start with so we spent a lot of time there!

The only negative I would say was that obviously we were there at more of an off peak time, which is fine. However it would have been helpful to know that not all of the facilities were available. For example, only 1 restaurant was open on the first evening and then another opened up on the second but by the end of the week we had pretty much exhausted the menu options in both. Don’t get me wrong it was all tasty and well prepared etc. but I had been under a different impression that was all. In terms of lunchtimes the restaurant on the village square literally only served cheese and ham toasties, not their full menu. Also our villa had obviously not been used for a few months as it was freezing on the first night, really cold. It warmed up by the next day or two. Maybe a bit of preparation on that would have been nice.

It has certainly not marred anything, as I am persuading my husband to go again next year! And I will be in touch when we have decided on dates."

  • TG 23 September 2014 "We have had an absoutely amzing time. The whole experience was exceptional from the transfers to the food, service, staff and childrens facilitys.

If I was going to mention anything it would be that the childcare services and creche etc were very expensive. For a holiday of that price and star rating I kind of would expect this to be complimentry.

All in all though it was excellent. 4.5 out of 5.

We will defo travel with you again."

  • SL 22 September 2014 "We had an amazing holiday thank you. There is nothing I could fault at all. In terms of what we needed for travelling with a 6 month old and three year old - we couldn't have asked for more! I would give it 5/5 and have already raved about it to all my Mummy friends! I have never left a review on Trip Advisor (having travelled extensively) I plan to do so for Martinhal.

I also wanted to say that the help Mark gave us was invaluable. We will be in touch when we next want to go away."

  • SG 11 June 2014 "We had a terrific time at Martinhal again this year. Our Garden House was spotless, comfortable & spacious. As always, the resort was immaculate, staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble and the facilities were fantastic. We made use of the crèche and the Fox Club and were very reassured to see some familiar faces (from last year) among the staff in these clubs. The clubs are absolutely excellent, providing age related activities which our boys loved. The restaurants & bars, while a little pricey, provided great food. It is perfect not having to carry cash there and having to charge everything, include shop purchases, to our room bill. That was an improvement on last year. It was our first year of holidaying in the school half term and we were pleasantly surprised that Martinhal never felt "busy". All in all, we had a very relaxing, enjoyable holiday.......can't wait for next time!

Thank you Atarra for all your help in booking this holiday, hopefully we'll be booking up for 2015 soon!"

  • JB 08 October 2013 "We had a fantastic time at Martinhal, every aspect of the resort has been well thought through to make it as stress-free as possible with young children - no mean feat! Our apartment was lovely, we were upgraded to a 3 bedroom which was great, and it was both stylish and practical. We had taken kids cutlery and plates as we have never been anywhere that thinks of that but it was all there! The beanbags in the garden were a great touch and was great to be able to hire potty training kit, bed guards etc. The facilities around the resort were fantastic in every regard, lots of things to amuse the little ones, I spent quite a lot of time drinking wine in the camper van at M bar! Our daughter loved Raposinhos, she said she had been 'to a party place' when we picked her up, she wanted to go every day! The staff were great with her and the set up there is great, it felt very secure to leave her there. The restaurants were well equipped for children from menu choices to the highchairs and space for buggies at each table. The only thing I would say, and this is really a small thing in a sea of positives, was that Os Gamobozinos seemed really short staffed and service took a while.

I'd be happy to give it a 5, i've already recommended you/the resort to several friends, let me know how we make that 'official'!"

  • GT 02 October 2013 Yes, we had an amazing first family holiday, thank you xx

We were very happy with the resort. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. As we arrived early before official check in time, they ensured our room was cleaned early so we could get in which was appreciated after travelling with an 11 month old. The villa was amazing with everything you need in terms of kitchen, washing machine etc, but with the luxury of knowing cleaners will come gives mums a real break! We loved the restaurants with play areas and high chairs at every table. The crèche was fantastic and the evening entertainment for little ones was great. Our daughter was a little poorly with an eye infection, but the resort were fantastic getting us to a doctor and it was very re-assuring since it was our first time away as a family.

We were so happy to be somewhere that was so accommodating of families and will definitely go back or book with yourselves somewhere that you clearly very carefully select.

Thank you so much for arranging everything beforehand, we were very impressed and it was nice not to be let down in anyway!

  • JH 09 September 2013 I would give Martinhal  a score of 9 out of 10 – great location, nice accommodation, great resort service, amazing set-up for the kids – really well thought through for families.  Dreadful restaurant service and quite expensive food (although food itself quite good).  Would have given it 10 out of 10 if it weren’t for the restaurant service.

  • MF 05 May 2013 "We had a lovely time. We could not fault the resort. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We stayed at an Ocean House, the views were spectacular. The grounds of the resort were beautifully landscaped, honeysuckle and jasmine, cascading purple flowers, ornamental rosemary bushes and lavender.
At every corner there was something for our little toddler to do to keep him occupied, be it the supervised play areas, playgrounds, trampoline. At the family surf bar there was even a little set of stairs leading up to a raised balcony so little ones could order their own drinks at the bar!
Our toddler is nearly 2 and half and a little Houdini, he managed to escape out of the front door of our house. This was a little concerning as you can imagine so we let the reception know. They were very quick to respond that evening providing us with a Stairgate for his room. The next day we had a chain fitted on the front door.
The resort, the pools and the beach were very clean. The outdoor bean bags a very clever idea. The food at the restaurants was very tasty (though somewhat pricey), an excellent breakfast was provided in the mornings.
We shall be using your company again in the future to book our next holiday, thank you very much for all your help and advice."

  • LT 21 April 2013 "I just wanted to say a massive thank you for organising our holiday at Martinhal. We arrived home with a heavy heart on Tuesday eve. It was truly a magical place for family holidays.

I would like to know if there are any early-bird offers for booking next year? We are keen to go again and would be very much interested in price and availability for next Easter.

    Thanks again"

  • Anon by request 18 September 2012 "We had a wonderful time, thank you. I would unreservedly recommend the resort, it was fantastic. The properties were of a very high standard, the crèche great, the pools etc all wonderful. The food was good and the flexibility (meals available at the shop, takeaway available, babysitting availably) was excellent. Everything was clean and well run. Such a relaxing break for people with young children. We had a brilliant time and would be keen to return!"

  • NA 14 September 2012 "I just wanted to thank you once again for your recommendation. Martinhal was wonderful from start to finish. The food/restaurants, accomodation, pool selection. The children had the kids club to themselves, the activities and amenities were superb. They loved it. Nothing was too much trouble.
We would definitely return to the resort. A wonderful weekend.
    Hopefully speak again soon."

  • OG 22 July 2012 "I wanted to thank you for the help you gave us booking our holiday at the Martinhal. This was our first family holiday so we were very apprehensive about travelling with small children but the Martinhal is a fantastic resort for families and the staff were beyond helpful. We had a truly amazing holiday,"

  • RG 02 April 2012 "We had a great time thanks (a few days of rain early in the week but then we had a few hot days by the pool which was very welcome indeed!).

We were very impressed by the resort. The ocean house was spacious, furnished to a very high standard, and had a great view out to the sea and harbour. The kitchen was better equipped than we expected: a full sized hob, oven, large fridge/freezer, dish washer, toaster, coffee machine - and a large dinning table. So it was a pleasurable experience to take our time and have breakfast in the house whilst looking out to sea (a plus point compared to Porto Sani in our view), and we could also cook a few evening meals for the kids when we went out. The resort supermarket whilst small was well stocked and they had a range of home-cooked ready meals if you didn't want to cook. They also had fresh pastries and (homemade) bread each day.

There were a number of swimming pools to choose from with paddling pools for the kids - all adequately warm given it was early April, and there were large bean bags to lounge around in. The village square was well thought out for the (young) kids - a basic restaurant where you could watch them play, and the various kids clubs were located there. The staff made a real effort with the kids, so we ended booking our two (3 and 4yrs) for an afternoon in the club which they enjoyed. One of the staff also baby-sat for us on two occasions. The As Dunas restaurant by the sea-facing pool was good, perhaps over-priced for what it was but the grilled fish were very nice. We ate at O Terraco two nights and both meals (and wine!) were v. good.

We walked along the beach one day over to Sagres, but I have to say it didn't do much for us and lacked charm - we got a taxi straight back to the resort. If the kids had been older we might have rented a car, or walked along the coastal paths to other beaches but we just wanted to relax and so were quite happy basing ourselves in Martinhal and not being that adventurous. One of the waiters said the wind/breeze can be a nuisance but either we didn't notice it (we live by the sea in England anyway), or it was particularly calm the week we stayed.

Overall it was a great stay and perhaps just tops Porto Sani (where we've been twice, we liked it so much) on the basis of better kids facilities and larger, more equipped accommodation. However, Martinhal needs to be careful - we went at the beginning of the season, and it wasn't quite running as smoothly as you would expect from a top rate resort and I would say they need to focus on training their staff (e.g. we tried to book bikes but they were unsure how to do this, they weren't too sure how to work the gym equipment, and on a few occasions a disorganised front of house staff in As Dunas seemed overwhelmed during service). These are minor points to help them raise their game and didn't in any way spoil our experience. We would definitely go back!"

  • LP 24 September 2011 "We had a wonderful holiday at the Martinhal so thank you so much for booking for us. Everything was just as we had booked (crèche slots/garden apartment) with absolutely no issues.

The hotel is fantastic and exactly as marketed on your website. As you can see we had a great time.

You did however ask specifically for all feedback and I think it is worth raising just one point with you regarding the drivers for the airport transfers.

Whilst the drivers turned up perfectly on time for both inbound and outbound pick up which was great - we did have a problem with the driver who did our return pick up to take us back to Faro. He was on time and there was no traffic so we had loads of time to get to the airport yet he drove extremely erratically and fast for the entire journey. On a brighter note - the driver who picked us up on arrival was fantastic and even stopped to put sunshades in the back for the kids!

Anyway - I will most definately be scouring your website for places to go next year so you will no doubt hear from me in the future! Thanks again"

  • AN 14 September 2011 "We had a lovely time at the Martinhal thankyou. The garden house was perfect for us. We were lucky to get one which had a fairly private garden with high wall so the babies couldn't escape! It was very easy to relax and just let them play, both in the garden and by the pools.
Because of the time of year, the Village Pool and Club 98 were very quiet and didn't heat the toddler pools so we stuck to the Oasis pool which was lovely and warm with a shallow section for toddlers and reasonable-sized deeper pool, and also the Beach Club which was more lively.

The downside of going in late September is that Os Gambozinos restaurant stopped serving breakfast and lunch on September 19th so the only choice for breakfast was O Teracco which wasn't very suitable for toddlers. We ended up having breakfast in our house which suited us fine anyway. Mostly in the evenings we ate at the Os Gambozinos buffet which was perfect for toddlers as they don't get charged and can try all sorts of different food. We had a babysitter booked for 2 evenings and had dinner at O Teracco which was lovely. The 2nd night we remembered to stay hungry and went for the taster menu which was fabulous. They were very flexible too - we came home early the 1st night and the babysitting fee was reduced accordingly and we were very late the 2nd night which he didn't seem to mind at all.

The main advantage going out of season was that the kids club was quiet so our 18-month old twins were allowed in the older kids club instead of the creche. Obviously the charges stay the same as they need more staff per child but there is a lot more space and excellent toys, slides, climbing frames etc. The other children in the creche seemed a lot younger and I think our 2 would have been bored there.
Overall, this was the perfect place for us to relax with our toddlers - with the short flight, friendly staff and very good child-friendly facilities.

Thanks again for your help. You were very patient with my constantly changing list of requirements. We will definitely recommend you to friends."

  • AS 14 September 2011 "Everything was great. The apartment was great, very well furnished and appointed. The daycare “classes” were very cool and Matthew enjoyed them – although he complained a bit until we moved him into classes with older kids. I can’t think of any complaints really. The market was very small and expensive but we had a car so could go to the Intermarche to get proper groceries for making meals. The Wifi was spotty, I guess, so that could count as a real complaint. Service was excellent. We had a babysitter for a couple of nights and she was awesome."

  • KO 29 August 2011 "I was going to drop you a note to say thanks and let you know that we really enjoyed our stay at Martinhal. In the end I think it was the perfect place for us - the self-catering was ideal and we ended up cooking quite a bit. Here are my thoughts on the resort:

    - Tastefully laid out and decorated - nice touches like cork coffee tables which are round and soft for small heads - subtle touches make it great for small kids. You had mentioned that the resort was full while we were there but definitely didn't feel like it - it's set out in a way that gives everyone enough space.

    - The house layout was great as we had the garden so could lay out in the sun when the kids were asleep during the day

    - Kitchen was fully stocked to enable cooking - like I say we used it a lot. Only downside is that the cleaning staff don't touch this area - wouldn't expect them to clean pots and pans but they could empty the dishwasher etc a few times in the week

    - The staff were super friendly and helpful - they had terrible reviews on tripadvisor before we left and I can't see why. Everyone we met seemed to make a big effort.

    - We only ate in the O Terraco restaurant which was very nice - good food.

    - We rented a car which I would definitely advise others to do as there are some nice beaches in the surrounding area and is good for buying food and wine etc.

    - The staff in the creche who also did babysitting were very sweet - we were very comfortable leaving the babies there.

Thanks again for your help - it was a good pick!"

  • JR 10 July 2011 "We had a lovely time at the Martinhal. They really cater for the children which made our holiday v relaxing. The only thing I would point out to the hotel is that I couldn't understand why 3 of the paddling pools weren't heated. They were too cold and therefore not used by the kids - which I think is a shame considering they have thought of all the other things for the kids (eg. shade over one of the paddling pools, pool toys etc ..). They even had a little playground with slides and swings.

Regarding the kids club, I thought the staff were brilliant and activities/toys they provided were v good. I only found this out by chance otherwise the hotel would have charged me for the 2 hours each day as I pre booked. If you book a 2 hr slot 24 hours in advance its free - might be worth noting on your website - and there was always space available.

I think the communication between the reception staff and its other staff (eg. kids club and restaurant) could be improved.

I have to say the winds at the resort were v strong at night and the resort can be chilly even in July ! I know a lot of people were put off by this. Luckily the days were hot but even though there was a wind it was nice as cooled it down a bit. Apparently these winds are the norm due to the position of Sagres and you definitely required warmer clothes in the evening.

Thanks again for booking the bedguards/kids club for us ... and answering all our questions prior to our holiday. We will be recommending your website to our friends."

  • EM 17 June 2011 " We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Martinhal, it was the best holiday we've had with our little girl. The accomodation was perfect - spacious, clean, and functional and really well equipped. The resort itself was great - lots of different pool areas (only comment would be most of the baby pools were unheated which made them pretty chilly and not very useable, the one at the main pool was heated though), lots of choices of places to eat, friendly staff. The on-site supermarket/ deli was good, the only comment would be that they could be better stocked with baby products, i.e. they didn't have many nappies or baby wipes which are real essentials. But their cake and food selection was lovely. We appreciated the welcome pack in our room on arrival.
The airport transfers were good, the only comment was that we didn't seem to have the time for the pick up from the hotel to go back to the airport anywhere on our information and the phone number listed for the taxi firm was apparently from Malta! We got reception to sort this for us and get us the time but I wonder if either I missed it somewhere or it was missed off our details?

I would really recommend it to other people with children and we would be very tempted to go back again, which is quite unusual for us as we tend not to visit the same place twice (we have a rule that there are too many nice places in the world and too little time to see them all...) but because it was so good we really would consider going back. I would also recommend that others book through Tots Too as I believe you got us a good deal with the resort and it was helpful having the transfers arranged."

  • SH 13 June 2011 "We had a lovely time at Martinhal despite having a poorly toddler! I was very impressed with the resort. The service, accommodation and facilities were superb. In fact there was very little we would have changed, if anything at all. We felt like we had space in our villa/ garden and in the resort itself with the various pools, beach and sports area to choose from.

Our transfer was also faultless so thank you for organising that along with our general booking. We felt the service we received from Essential Escapes / Tots Too was also very good right through from the initial booking to when we needed help delaying our departure. So basically a very big thank you and we had a lovely time!"

  • KU 12 June 2011 "We have had a wonderful holiday, thank you!

We thought the Resort overall was superb. Both myself and my Husband both agreed that it was the most relaxing break we have had since we have been on holiday with the children, simply because the resort had thought of everything to keep them happy and therefore so were we!!!

The Garden House we stayed in was beautiful and offered us ample room and the décor was beautiful, clean and airy. A small comment would be that they possibly need to leave basic instructions for the coffee machine, microwave and hob in English (there was an instruction manual there for the coffee machine however it was in Portugese!) as the kitchen was very “cutting edge” and the appliances were not immediately easy to operate!

The food and beverage welcome pack left by Martinhal was quite extensive and very good.

The childrens facilities were absolutely second to none – the free to use childrens cycles and the 3 playhouses in the village square provided delightful entertainment for all ages, and saved us from the usual impatience whilst waiting for their meals to arrive at the Os Gambozinos restaurant next door, so we were able to relax with a glass or wine whilst watching them play!

The kids club was also great although I can imagine in peak times they will be fully booked much of the time, so I would definitely advise any future clients to book in advance prior to arrival.

Our favourite pool area was undoubtably the Beachclub pool. The decked, clean pool area, with its abundance of comfortable “fatboy” beanbags, the heated main pool and the adjacent shallow toddler pool were idyllic and provided our children with hours of entertainment. The only small suggestion here would be that perhaps it might be an idea to suggest to the resort that the toddler pool had some communal water toys in it (as they had in the Porto Sani Village pool when we stayed there) that could be kept in the towel porters area, eg watering cans, woggles, pouring cups etc. as although the resort give the children a free welcome pack and bag containing a bucket and spade set, all the children had the same set which made life a little interesting as they got confused as to which set was theirs in the pool and caused a few tears!!!

The enclosed private sandpit next to this area was lovely too and could be easily watched over from the pool area, and the inclusion of a full size free to use sunken Trampoline here too was very much appreciated and well used by the older school age children.

We were a little confused that the oasis pool “the focal point of the Garden Houses” is billed as being the “main pool ideal for families” but isn’t heated or manned with a towel attendant, and therefore was empty pretty much all of the time which was a shame as in theory it was a lovely pool.

Our main criticism of the complex was the “hit and miss” customer service. It could simply be that the resort is very new and needs time to develop, however certain areas were much better than others. When we talked to other families everyone commented on the same thing and our view was that as a new resort the staff should be desperate to please and be full of enthusiasm in order to generate future business.

We arrived at lunchtime and the reception staff were very vague as to when our house would be ready. I had understood the house would be ready at about 2pm, (I’m not sure if I had just presumed this or read it somewhere in our booking confirmation?) but we were told it would be 3pm when it would be ready and to come back to reception then, but when we came back to the reception at 3pm, we were then told that when they checked the computer they “thought” it was ready but it was unconfirmed so were sent away again for another 20 minutes so they could check it.

We would have expected a warmer welcome here as our first impression of the resort, and perhaps at least offered a welcome drink while we had waited for a couple of hours to check in to our house?

The beach club bar had excellent customer service, however the 2 family restaurants were not so consistent. The Os Gambozinos restaurant had some slow service and some of the waiters were at times very grumpy. (There were a couple of good waiters/ waitress’ but again hit and miss)

Similarly we sat down at a table at As Dunas one early evening when the restaurant was only moderately busy, and were not approached at all with a menu or greeted – my husband had to go and search out some staff to get menus.

We dined out at the O Terraco fine dining restaurant one evening and the service and food here was excellent.

In terms of food – the childrens menu was good, however the childrens menu was exactly the same at both family restaurants – it might have been nice to have had a choice for them of different menus?

The Spa was heavenly. Both my Husband and I enjoyed our treatments and the atmosphere and décor in the spa was completely idyllic. The one small niggle was the initial booking was difficult (via main reception) and even after you referred me to your direct contact at the resort to make the booking for the Spa and Kids club simultaneously, the Spa booking was still duplicated to the following day and we had to query the bill as they had charged us for treatments we didn’t have on the following day. (The hotel did remove the mistaken charges however when asked).

The only thing I think the resort lacked was an adult “drinks bar” with some discreet entertainment eg live music etc.

On our “Adults only night out” at the fine dining restaurant we wanted to finish the night off with some cocktails or a nightcap, and although you could do this in the lounge area of O terrace, there was nowhere else to go on to afterwards.

Os Gambozinos did have some lovely live music on early in the evening but only for one night.

Something like this would have been welcomed by us at a separate bar area later in the evening?

I hope that this has given you a good flavour of the resort and constructive feedback. I am sure that the resort will develop and be very successful in the future, and we would certainly recommend it to our friends and family as a fantastic child friendly holiday.

Thanks also for your help and assistance in selecting the holiday, and again we will have no hesitation in choosing you and recommending you to book holidays with in the future."

  • CO 20 May 2011 "We had a lovely time thanks and we would definitely go back and recommend it to our friends. We didn't have any major issues but below are a few comments:

Accommodation: The garden villas were light, airy, clean and spacious and the perfect size for a family of 3 or 4. All the necessary kitchen utensils and appliances were present. There were also sun loungers and big cushions in the enclosed garden area which was great when the baby was asleep. The only thing I would mention with regards to having children is that there isn't a toilet on the ground floor so you have to keep going upstairs. When we go again we certainly stay in the Ocean houses as they are closer to the all the facilities and we did see lots of families staying in them. The garden houses are equally good as there is a pool in the middle but it was rarely used and most families went to the beach club. The garden houses are very secure but in general the resort seemed very safe and I think that the ocean houses are equally suitable for families as the garden ones.

Childrens Facilities: Excellent: 4 pools, one indoor/outdoor that was great if is is really hot or rains, decent playground, Wendy houses for the kids near the O Gambozinos restaurants which keeps them occupied. Down by the beach club there is a great sandpit and trampoline as well as a decent baby pool. The sandpit and trampoline area could do with more shade and a lot of parents mentioned this to the management.

Kids Club and Creche: Again, excellent lots of toys, slides etc and the staff were all very nice and helpful. We used it 3 times and A really enjoyed it.

Supermarket: The nearest one was only 2km away and the hotel kindly arranged a taxi that cost about 10 euros there and back. The supermarket in the resort had most items although it did run low of fresh milk and waterprood nappies. You could also get takeaway pizzas and curries.

Food: Not a bad choice of restaurants, O Gambozinos was great for pizzas and pastas and there was lots to do for kids. O Terraco was good and we enjoyed it. probably our main gripe was the level of service and consistency of the food at As Dunas, which was the restaurant by the beach club and we had a few duff meals but at least it was good for kids.

The transfers to and from the airport were very good, nice spacious cars and the journey took about 1.5 hours.

If we were there for 2 weeks I would certainly have wanted a car as Lagos Zoo and Marine World would have been good to go to but all is all it was a excellent trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to go away with the family but not want to spend more than 3 hours on the plane.

Helen, thanks again for all your help, we will certainly recommend Tots Too to our friends and we will be in touch when we book our next holiday."

  • SL 15 May 2011 "We had a good holiday, thanks, and would definitely go back there (potentially for a week in Sept?). We will probably hire a car next time, rather than relying on transfers (not that there were any problems with them, just that access to a car would have made shopping for food for self-catering easier, plus would have allowed further exploration of the area).

The accommodation and location were both great.

Only negative comments would be about some of the restaurants; service was a bit flaky - the norm seemed to be for one of us to go looking for a menu, then try and find someone to place an order with, request the bill from, etc - just not very attentive. Also we found some of the pricing in the restaurants a bit inconsistent - 14 euros for a tomato & mozzarella salad starter, when a pizza was only 9-10 euros seemed strange to us. Finally, some of the restaurant opening hours etc were a bit strange, especially given that the resort caters so heavily for young families (as an example, the piza restaurant doesn't open in the late afternoon/eve until 5.30pm, when a lot of parents would want to feed there children a bit earlier than that; you can order pizzas to take away earlier than that, so it isn't that there are no staff around to prepare the food!).

    But overall, very positive.

Many thanks for your help with making the arrangements, I'll be in touch in due course to book another visit!"

  • EOD 04 May 2011 "We had a very successful trip and thoroughly enjoyed the Martinhal. It's a lovely resort - no doubt helped by the fact it's all brand new and very well appointed. The house was great and you can tell it's been very well thought-through from a design perspective but it's also very practical and comfortable - we particularly liked the 'fat boy' bean bags and whilst it's only a small detail, a sloping bath was perfect for bathing the baby and she could splash around really easily!

I imagine we were there at just the right time from the perspective that it's wasn't hugely busy. Even so, the pool by the hotel and the beach, proved the most popular making it tricky to bag a sun bed when the sun was out but with another three pools on offer there were plenty of places to escape to. There were good food options with the various restaurants. The service was a bit hit and miss in particular in the restaurant by the beach but the food was good and there were lots of options eg. takeaway pizzas and buffet as well as a la carte. Sadly we didn't get to try the 'grown up' restaurant in the hotel this time!

We loved the fact that we could hire all the necessary equipment for the baby. The buggy we hired was great and N thoroughly enjoyed her big, three-wheeled, off-roader for the week.

In terms of gripes - I was a little surprised that it wasn't possible to lock a door in the house which led to the roof. It required maintenance to come and lock it. From a security and safety perspective it seemed a bit of an oversight. Also our child isn't yet mobile it would be a hazard for an adventurous toddler.

Our other issue was the transfer - Windsor travel gave us an itinerary on arrival with a pick up of 6.45am for the return journey. We thought this was a little early but didn't query it, assuming they know best. When they hadn't arrived at 7am, we spoke to the hotel reception to try and help who, as you can imagine were a little startled at the prospect of locating a car so early in the morning with an infant seat to transfer us to Faro. Eventually the driver arrived at 7.20am and it transpired his given time was clearly 7.20am. Although happy he had arrived, we were somewhat put out at the discrepancy, mainly because it meant we had got up at 5.30am to ensure we were all up and ready, unnecessarily. Again when travelling with a 7 month old, this wasn't ideal. During our stay, we used a local taxi guy booked by the Martinhal and I would say his service in terms of vehicle, quality of car seat and driving was much more reassuring.

All in all though, we had a great time and would probably return again perhaps with another family. I wouldn't say Sagres has a lot on offer but as the resort is so well equipped, it doesn't really matter when travelling with children.

Thanks for your help organising and securing the booking for us. We'll be sure to look to Tots Too again in the future and recommend to our friends with children."

  • CP 23 April 2011 "Resort was excellent .. happy we tried both houses but if go back would stay in ocean house ... unfortunately it rained for 5-6 days in the middle and G got an ear and throat infection so needed to make a couple of trips into Lagos ... was intending on writing a review for TripAdvisor so can forward that on.

Have already recommended yourself and the resort to a couple of people at work.

Thanks for all your help. K and I will have to start thinking about another holiday soon for later in the summer perhaps - we'll get back in contact with you."

  • LB 17 April 2011 "We had a fantastic time at Martinhal. It is a great resort, especially for young families. The villas are superbly kitted out with a contemporary feel and high quality appliances. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful – they provided a training toilet seat, toddler step in the bathroom and bed guards. There are thoughtful touches like kids club staff circulating in the Village Square in the evenings offering activities such as face painting and football for the little ones while parents finish dinner. At the beach restaurant there is an area for little kids to play and lounge while the parents eat dinner. At the restaurant on the village square there is a very high quality buffet dinner which caters for young kids and parents – the food was some of the best out of all the restaurants in the resort.

Swimming pools and kids’ facilities were all great. Kids club was good, though as the staff admitted, it is not a place to leave your kids all day as they would get bored. But it is good to leave them for a few hours while parents play tennis or go for a walk. Not sure if teenagers would get bored although there were quite a few teenagers around who seemed happy.

The only downside was that the weather in mid April was mixed. We had a fair amount of rain but did have some sunny days when we were able to go swimming.

We will definitely be going back! Thanks for your help."
